• Science and technology create new challenges as fast as they solve old ones.
• Life for many is meaningless and purposeless, leading to soaring use of mood-altering substances, and rising suicide rates.
• More and more people are retreating from the real world of relationship and community into computerised virtual worlds and electronic communications.
• Economic globalization and the growing power of corporations is increasing exploitation, environmental destruction and resource conflicts.

Some individuals ask, "What does any of this to do with me?" Well, the short answer is:

Everything.

In a universe where everything and everyone is interdependent and interconnected, the question you should ask instead is, "How does all this not affect me?"

Some of us have spent our entire lives seeking and grasping after whatever it is that we have been told to seek and grasp after; I call them "the supermarket item/shopping list lifestyle" seekers. The "nominals".

Some of us grew weary of (or was initially programmed to react aversely to) this nominal supermarket programming, counter-programmed in other words, and sought religion or alternative lifestyles to jettison that weariness, a weariness in part arising due to failure to achieve in the materialistic arena. It is even more likely brought about because of success and high achievement in the supermarket of life. Except that has brought on even more anguish and confusion rather than any peace or relief.

So when you begin to see and feel and intuit that really, in truth, what is happening and is going to happen in the greater world about you, happens to you as well, you begin to sit up. You begin to take notice. You begin to see connections. "The personal is political, the political is personal, we are the world, the world is us."

And why is this the case?
"Consciousness is not an individual; it is the intersubjective field that we all share. So when a group of individuals comes together in this context, that collective represents consciousness itself." - Andrew Cohen -

And what an amazement that would be! Making a leap here..
Let us ask ourselves, "What do we really want? What are our deepest heart's desires?"

Because...
When we talk about this - our deepest heart's desire - we are actually dislodging, displacing that contraction away from relationship with the allness of life, in its multi-dimensional forms. That "contraction" is what actualizes the very dangerous conditions we see and experience in the world about us today. Let us examine this idea for a moment. What is our heart's deepest desire? We start with that.

Usually we begin with stating that we desire objects. What is the "supermarket list"? What does it usually consist of? Car, house, career, status. Even if objects are said to be persons we desire we actually mean we desire an object relative to our subject. This is the great insight that Sigmund Freud had, and he called it "object relations". The infant "I" desires mother (the object that is related to the subjective 'I'). At this level of understanding or cognition, all others are merely objects, only I am "real". All others exist to either fulfil or frustrate our desires.

We begin to perceive then that there is actually another person in the object we desire. The other is also a subject, an "I" in his or her own right. Intersubjectivity begins, and is the grounds for mature growth and any kind of spiritual development worth having.

So in essence, to be able to see deeply, feel deeply, understand deeply another as a person in their own right, accepting that as more than an intellectual fiction, we begin to be drawn into authentic relationship with that other. And we may begin to undo object relations. And in so doing cease to identify everyone and everything in our world as mere object made to please only "me". We may begin at this point to frustrate the mechanisms of hatred and harm and sorrow.

We may begin to transform ourselves. And transform our entire world.
